Monuments (Castles and Mondego Walls)
The town of Penela (15km away) is the capital of the county and has a beautiful castle, which you can visit, classified as a national monument. It was built in the 11th century, although what remains today dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside the castle is the church of São Miguel, which was built in the 12th century. Going another 21 km north, we reach Lousã where we find another castle built in a very particular place, in a small and narrow valley, near the fluvial beach of Sra. da Piedade (and where spectacular hiking trails begin). Continuing in the line of the Mondego castle and walls, passing through Coimbra, you can also visit the Castle of Montemor, the rice fields of the Mondego and finally the walls at Figueira da Foz.
